Discrimination at work is unlawful. You have the right not to be disadvantaged because of certain of your characteristics. If you are, then you could have grounds for challenging your employer and winning compensation for their poor treatment of you.

What are protected characteristics?

Protected characteristics are set out very clearly in law, they are:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Race
  • Religion or belief (or lack of)
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
  • Marriage or civil partnership
  • Pregnancy

Only discrimination that is based on one, or more, of these stands any chance of leading to a successful claim. And, of course, there are legal tests in place to ensure that what has happened to you places your employer under some sort of legal liability.

Discrimination takes many different forms. It’s sometimes blatant, sometimes subtle. It could be an interviewer’s question about your plans to start a family. It might be the imposition of a dress code which is at odds with your religious beliefs. Perhaps you’ve been turned down for promotion because your disability prevents you from passing an assessment. Or you may have been singled out at work and picked on because you look, act or represent yourself in a particular way.

Talk to one of our employment lawyers. We will advise on whether you may have suffered discrimination and what you may be able to do about it. The important point to remember in all of this is that the law is here to protect you from faring any worse than your colleagues for a reason related to a protected characteristic. We will help level the playing field and win compensation to make up for the difficulties you have had to go through.
